New Digital X-ray System
The Surprise Valley Health Care District (SVHCD) Xray department went digital on Friday, Jan 27th. SVHCD is the first of the three hospitals for which Dr. D.T. Matthews, MD (Radiologist) reads X-rays that has digital equipment. Modoc Medical Center and Mayers Memorial will be converting to digital systems in the near future.
The District acquired the digital system from a clinic in Oregon. This system, if purchased new, would cost approximately $35K. However, the system was acquired at a significant savings to the District.
“When film is used, if an image is too dark or light, the technologist is stuck with the resulting image. With digital X-rays, the physician has the ability to manipulate the image using computer software in order to bring out the details in each area of the image. In addition, the electronic images can be transmitted to literally any place in the world through the internet. It is truly a remarkable technology,” said Diana Dix, RT(R), Radiology Supervisor.
Digital X-ray systems use the existing X-ray equipment. Instead of using an X-ray plate with film in it, the technologist uses an X-ray plate with a phosphorous screen inside. The Computed Radiography Unit removes the phosphorous screen from the cassette, scans the information, creates a digital image, erases the phosphorous plate, and returns it to the cassette. The same phosphorous plate is used over and over again, just like a digital camera, eliminating the need for film and processing chemicals.

New X-ray Room Completed
We are happy to announce that the installation of our new imaging equipment at Surprise Valley Hospital has been completed. It took countless hours of planning and coordination by Bill Bostic with the installer (Jeremiah Dufer), the electrician (Bryn Weiser), the licensed contractor (Jason Diven), an OSHPD Inspector, and an Inspector of Record.
Over the years, Jeremiah Dufer has worked hard to maintain the old GE equipment, knowing how vital it is for our community to have x-ray services available, especially in an emergency situation. He often rearranges his schedule to travel here and provide his expertise when we need his help. For this project, Jeremiah was able to provide us with equipment that met the unique constraints of our facility while saving us thousands of dollars in additional OSHPD fees and construction costs. In addition, one of our Board Members, Jason Diven, donated his time as a contractor to complete the structural changes needed for the new room. A new coat of paint was donated by Diana Dix, Radiology Supervisor, and her nephew, Russell Primm.
The Dr. Roberts Fund provided a loan to the hospital to pay for the replacement of our outdated, non-functioning equipment. The total cost of the project should reach approximately $75,000 with almost $10,000 of that going to pay for the California Code Requirements. The Surprise Valley Health Care District will be able to replenish the Dr. Roberts Fund with MediCal incentive payments that we will receive for implementing an Electronic Health Record (HER) system early next year.
The entire name of the Fund is The Dr. Roberts Surprise Valley Hospital Emergency Fund, Inc. Dr. Roberts used to provide emergency funding to the hospital in times of need, and the Fund was formed to fill that need after her death. Through private donations, sponsors, raffles, fundraisers, the annual dinner, the Chocolate Wars competition, and the annual Golf Tournament, their Board of Directors has worked tirelessly since its inception to raise this nest egg for just such an emergency.
The Dr. Roberts Fund would like to remind community members that their continued support is vital to the success of our facility. There is no way to know how much the next “emergency” will cost the facility, but we were extremely fortunate to be able to assist the hospital in the replacement of its X-ray equipment at this time. To find out more about the Dr. Roberts Fund go to www.DrRobertsFund.org.
“We are excited to complete the new X-ray equipment installation project. I am amazed how quickly it all came together thanks to the hard work and cooperation by everyone who was involved in this project. Our community will greatly benefit from this for years to come,” says Wanda Grove, Hospital Administrator.
